Did you know that one of the Tibetan lamas is a young man from Granada, Spain? Tibetan Buddhists believe that Ösel (that’s the name of the young man) is the reincarnation of another lama who died a little before Ösel was born. Ösel is only the fourth reincarnated lama in the West. Everything began in 1977, when his parents met Yeshe, a Tibetan lama who was travelling through Europe. Yeshe introduced them to Buddhist beliefs; since they showed themselves to be receptive, he suggested that they set up a retreat center in La Alpujarra, a mountainous region close to Granada. They lived there when some years later Maria became pregnant with Ösel. At the time, Yeshe had died. One night, Yeshe appeared to Maria in her dreams and asked her to take care of her future son since he was destined to be his new body. She didn’t give it much importance, but simultaneously Yeshe also entered the dreams of the lama Zopa, an old companion of his. In the dream Yeshe informed his friend that he was going to be reincarnated as a boy in the south of Europe. Zopa became very happy to know that his friend would return and he immediately left for Europe to find him. He finally found him in La Alpujarra. The Dalai Lama asked Ösel’s family to travel to India so that he and the other lamas could confirm the supposed reincarnation. Through various tests, such as choosing Yeshe’s personal objects out of a pile, they confirmed that Ösel was indeed the deceased lama. For some years Ösel lived there, together with his family, preparing himself for his priestly life.
